Artigo 88.º (employment permit)

The article of Lei 23/2007 that grants a residence permit to work as an employee. It requires an employment contract made under the law and registration with Segurança Social, plus the general conditions of article 77 — a valid residence visa, means of subsistence and accommodation among them.

The well-known 88.º n.º 2 route — applying from inside Portugal without a work visa, through a manifestação de interesse — was revoked on 3 June 2024 (Decreto-Lei 37-A/2024); expressions of interest filed before that date could continue under transitional rules. The neighbouring 89.º covers self-employed work and entrepreneurs. Since Lei 62/2026 took effect on 11 September 2026, changing employer — or switching the type of activity — only requires a notice to AIMA, without a new residence permit.
