Moving to Lisbon: the honest guide for expats (2026)
Lisbon is the postcard: light, hills, the river, a huge international scene and near year-round sun. It's also Portugal's most expensive city and the one where the housing crunch bites hardest. It can absolutely be the right choice — you just want to walk in with the trade-offs clear.
Why Lisbon
- The biggest international ecosystem — jobs, startups, events, English spoken widely, easy to land softly.
- Connectivity — a major international airport and the country's best transport links.
- Weather and lifestyle — mild winters, long summers, the coast and beaches close by.
The honest trade-off
Cost of living (indicative)
Rent: a 1-bed in a central area ~€1,100–1,600/month; prime areas well above.
Couple's monthly budget (rent excluded): ~€800–1,300.

Neighbourhoods, briefly
- Príncipe Real / Estrela — central, elegant, pricey.
- Alvalade / Areeiro — residential, family-friendly, better value.
- Cascais / Oeiras — coastal towns west of the city, popular with families (and international schools).
- Almada / Setúbal — across the river, more affordable with a commute.
Schools, healthcare, climate
The largest cluster of international schools is around Lisbon and Cascais — see the directory. Healthcare via SNS + private (how it works). Climate is warmer and drier than the north — winters are mild, summers hot.
Who it suits
People who want the biggest network, the best flight connections and warm weather, and who can budget for it. If the price makes you wince, Porto gives you a real city for less, and the Algarve gives you sun and space.

Rent in Lisbon in 2026
INE's median rent for new lease contracts in the municipality of Lisbon was €17.43/m² in the 12 months to June 2026 (based on 17,575 new contracts) — about 79% above the national median of €9.76/m². That is the highest municipal figure in Portugal. Multiplied by typical flat sizes, that gives the indicative monthly rents below. Treat them as a starting point rather than a quote: small flats usually cost more per m² than the median, and asking prices on portals tend to sit above signed contracts.
