Moving to the Algarve: the honest guide for expats (2026)
The Algarve is Portugal's sunshine coast — 300 days of it, beaches, golf, and the country's largest established English-speaking community. It's the classic retiree and remote-worker choice. It's also seasonal, spread out, and car-dependent in a way the cities aren't.
Why the Algarve
- Sun and warmth — the mildest winters in mainland Portugal and long dry summers.
- Established expat community — English widely spoken, services built around international residents.
- Space and nature — coast, countryside, and generally more house for your money than the cities.
- Faro airport — good seasonal European links.
The honest trade-off
Cost of living (indicative)
Rent: long-term 1–2-bed ~€800–1,400/month depending on town and season; prime coastal higher.
Couple's monthly budget (rent excluded): ~€700–1,100, plus a car.
Indicative 2026 — see the cost-of-living calculator.
Towns, briefly
- Lagos — lively, beautiful beaches, popular with younger expats.
- Tavira — quieter, authentic, eastern Algarve.
- Lagoa / Carvoeiro — established international areas, good schools nearby.
- Loulé / inland — more Portuguese, better value, still close to the coast.
Schools, healthcare, climate
International schools include Nobel Algarve, Vilamoura (CIV) and Vale Verde — see the directory. Healthcare via SNS + private (how it works). Climate: the warmest and driest in mainland Portugal.
Who it suits
Retirees and remote workers who want sun, space and an easy landing among English-speakers — and who don't mind a car and a quieter winter. If you want a walkable, year-round city, look at Porto or Lisbon.

Rent in the Algarve in 2026
INE's median rent for new lease contracts in the Algarve region was €10.96/m² in the 12 months to June 2026 (based on 8,895 new contracts) — about 12% above the national median of €9.76/m². It varies a lot by town: Faro €10.29/m², Tavira €11.46/m², Lagos €12.77/m². Multiplied by typical flat sizes, that gives the indicative monthly rents below. Treat them as a starting point rather than a quote: small flats usually cost more per m² than the median, and asking prices on portals tend to sit above signed contracts.
