Which region of Portugal fits you? How the matcher decides

How the matcher weighs your answers

The matcher compares seven places where most newcomers settle: Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, the Algarve and Madeira. Each has an editorial profile that scores nine traits from 0 to 1: career and remote-work scene, coast, warmth, city size, expat community, affordability, family life, investment and how cool and green it is. Your five answers become targets, each with a weight. The match is 100% minus the weighted average gap between your targets and each profile, and the three closest places are shown.

  • Top priority counts most, weight 1.6 for career, budget, family life or investment. "Beach and lifestyle" splits into coast (1.3) and warmth (1.2).
  • Pace: "big city" and "small and quiet" aim at the two ends of city size with weight 1.2; "mid town" aims at the middle with 0.8.
  • Climate: "warm and sunny" aims at maximum warmth (1.2), "mild" at the middle (0.7), and "cooler and green" switches to greenness (1.2).
  • Sea: "must-have" pulls hard towards the coast (1.4), "nice" gently (0.7), and "don't mind" leaves the coast out.
  • Community: a big expat scene or local immersion counts 1.1; "a mix" 0.6.

Under each result, up to three tags explain the fit. A tag appears only where you asked for something and the place scores at least 0.7 on it, or, for city size and community, where both your answer and the place sit clearly at the same end.

Worked example

With the default answers (career, big city, mild, sea is nice, big expat scene) Lisbon comes first at 97%, Porto second at 88% and Aveiro third at 62%. Now answer like someone stretching a budget: stretch my budget, mid town, cooler and green, don't mind the sea, local immersion. The ranking turns over: Braga 76%, Coimbra 73%, Aveiro 71%, while Lisbon drops to 20%. Braga's tags read "affordable", "cooler & green" and "local immersion". Change one answer at a time to see which one moves your result most.

How Portugal's regions differ

PlaceRent, INE median €/m²Nearest main airportIn one line
Lisbon17.43LisbonMost jobs, biggest international scene, highest rents
Porto14.48PortoA real big city at lower cost than Lisbon
Braga8.68PortoYoung, green, affordable, very Portuguese
Coimbra9.44Porto or LisbonUniversity city in the centre of the country
Aveiro9.75PortoSmall, flat and close to the beaches
Algarve10.96 (region)FaroSun and sea, large expat community, quieter in winter
Madeira12.32 (region)FunchalMild all year, green and mountainous, an island

Rent figures are INE medians for new leases in the 12 months to June 2026: municipality, or region where marked. The national median was €9.76/m².

  • Climate: the south and the Algarve are the driest and sunniest; the north is greener, with cooler and rainier winters; Madeira is mild all year.
  • Cost: rent drives most of the difference. Braga, Coimbra and Aveiro sit near or below the national median; Lisbon is about 80% above it.
  • Airports: Lisbon, Porto and Faro handle most international flights, and Madeira has its own airport at Funchal. Braga and Aveiro use Porto.
  • Schools: state schools are free everywhere for residents' children; international schools cluster around Lisbon and Cascais, Porto and the Algarve, with far fewer options elsewhere.
  • Expat community: largest in Lisbon and the Algarve, strong in Porto and Madeira, smaller in Braga, Coimbra and Aveiro, where daily life happens more in Portuguese.
  • Healthcare: every area has public health centres. The large university hospitals are in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, so specialist care can mean more travel from the Algarve or the islands.

What the matcher does not know

It does not know your budget in euros, your visa route, a job offer or where your family lives. It ranks places relative to each other, so 90% means "closest to your answers among these seven", not "90% happy". Use it to shortlist two or three places, read the city guides, then visit, ideally in winter as well as summer. Other places such as Cascais, Sintra, Ericeira or Viana do Castelo have their own pages in our city guides.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of Portugal is best for expats?

It depends on what you want. In the matcher, Lisbon and the Algarve have the largest expat communities, Porto balances a big city with lower costs, and Braga, Coimbra and Aveiro suit people who want lower rent and a more local life.

What is the cheapest region of Portugal to live in?

Among the matcher's seven places, Braga, Coimbra and Aveiro have the lowest rents, with INE medians of €8.68–9.75/m² against €17.43 in Lisbon. The Alentejo, at €6.00/m², is the lowest mainland region but is not in the matcher.

Where is the warmest place to live in Portugal?

In the matcher's profiles the Algarve scores highest for warmth, followed by Madeira, which is mild all year. The north is greener, with cooler and rainier winters.

How accurate is the match percentage?

It is a relative ranking built on our editorial profiles, not a verdict. It shows which of the seven places sits closest to your answers; treat it as a shortlist and visit before you decide.

Is Porto or Lisbon better for families?

The matcher rates Porto slightly higher for family life (0.80 against 0.70), and its rents are lower. Lisbon offers more jobs and more international schools.
