How long does it take to get a NIF — and can I get one before moving?
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax number — you need it for practically everything: opening a bank account, renting, buying property, signing utility contracts.
Via a fiscal representative / online service: ~€150–300.
When to do it: before you move — remotely, through a representative.
If you're outside the EU/EEA, you'll generally need a fiscal representative to obtain a NIF as a non-resident. Online services handle it remotely in days to a couple of weeks. Doing it early unlocks the bank account and housing steps of your move.
In person at a Finanças office it's free and same-day — but that only works once you're in Portugal, and most people need the NIF before arriving.
