Get your NIF before you move: the number everything depends on
A recurring scene in the expat groups: someone flies in for a scouting trip, finds an apartment they love, tries to reserve it — and grinds to a complete halt because they have no NIF. "Nothing moves without it," is how one agent put it in a comment thread, and that is exactly right. The scouting trip that was meant to end with a reservation ends instead with a promise to "sort the paperwork later", and by the time later arrives, the apartment has gone.
What the NIF is
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax number. You need it to sign a lease, buy a property, open a bank account, set up utilities, sign a phone contract — essentially every administrative step in the country depends on it. It is the first domino, and until it falls, none of the others can.
Free at Finanças if you do it in person.
~€150–300 through a fiscal representative or an online service if you are outside the EU and want it done before you arrive.
Non-EU applicants generally need a fiscal representative resident in Portugal to obtain it.
Why do it before you move
Doing it from abroad through a fiscal representative is the step that most often eats two extra weeks — which is exactly why you should start it early rather than treat it as an errand for after you land. If you arrive without a NIF, you cannot reserve the place you flew in to see, cannot open the bank account the visa needs, and cannot sign the lease that gives you an address. People who get the NIF weeks ahead simply move faster on everything that comes after.
- Non-EU: appoint a fiscal representative and apply remotely, or use a reputable paid service.
- EU citizens: the process is lighter — see EU citizens.
- Keep the confirmation somewhere safe; you will type that number into a dozen different forms over the coming months.
- The NIF is separate from the NISS (social security number) — do not confuse the two; you may need both eventually.
The timing and options are laid out in how long a NIF takes, and the next domino is usually the bank — see opening a bank account. If a visa is your route in, the relocation checklist shows exactly where the NIF sits in the sequence.
