How do I enrol my child in a Portuguese school — and when are the deadlines?
Public schools in Portugal are free for residents' children (textbooks usually included). Enrolment — matrículas — runs online through the Portal das Matrículas, where you can rank up to 5 schools by preference.
Documents: parents' & child's ID, atestado de residência (Junta de Freguesia), child's NIF, digital photo, vaccination record, birth certificate.
Children arriving from a foreign school enter as "pending equivalence" while their prior education is recognised — the enrolment completes after that process.
Two honest warnings from families who've done it: in Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve schools fill up — apply early and list several; and the first months are hardest for the child because of language. The public system's PLNM programme (Portuguese as a non-native language) exists exactly for this — ask the school about it directly.
International schools (IB, British, American) start around €5,000/year and cluster around Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve.
