Missed all school enrolment windows? Your child still has a place

Cosmic Vortex · Updated 2026-08-14 ✓ sourced

Families arriving in August discover the same thing in the same week: the school year starts in September, and every enrolment window for it closed months ago.

The panic is understandable. It is also mostly unnecessary — but the route you take from here is different from the one every guide describes.

The windows that already closed

Pre-school and 1st year: 22 April – 1 June
Years 6–9 and 11: 16 – 29 June
Years 2–5: 1 – 13 July
Years 10 and 12: 15 – 22 July
Late applications (fora de prazo): until 27 July for basic education, 5 August for secondary

Set by dispatch 4472-A/2026. If you are reading this in August, all of them have passed — including the late window.

The part nobody tells you first

Compulsory schooling in Portugal runs from 6 to 18. And a child under compulsory schooling always has a guaranteed place in a state school in their area of residence — or, if that school is full, in the nearest one with room.

That right does not switch off because a date passed. Missing the window changes which school you are likely to get, not whether your child goes to school.

Two consequences worth being blunt about. You may not get the school you wanted, and you may get one that is not the closest. That is the real cost of arriving late — not exclusion.

Residence papers are not a condition

This is the fear that keeps families from even asking: we are still waiting on AIMA, so we cannot enrol.

You can. Children of school age living in Portugal enrol like anyone else, regardless of the status of their residence process. A pending AIMA file is not a reason for a school to refuse a place, and it is worth knowing that before you walk in.

Stop using the portal — go to the agrupamento

Inside the windows, applications go through the Portal das Matrículas online. Outside them, the portal is not your route.

Find the agrupamento de escolas for the address where you will live, and go to its secretaria in person. That office places children who arrive off-cycle — including those who arrive from abroad mid-year.

Go with the address decided if you can. Placement follows residence, so an agrupamento cannot do much for someone who has not chosen where to live yet.

What to bring

Requirements vary slightly by agrupamento, so call ahead rather than queue twice. Generally expect: the child's identification, your identification, proof of address, the vaccination record (boletim de vacinas), and school records from the previous country.

Foreign school records usually need to be recognised so the child lands in the right year. Start that early — it is the step that most often delays a placement, and it does not depend on the school.

If you are already here and enrolled

Renewal is automatic for most families — you do nothing. You do have to act in the portal when there is a change of school, a move to a new cycle, or a choice of subjects to make. Those are the three moments where "automatic" quietly stops being automatic.

If you are still planning the move

Now you know the real calendar. A move timed for late August means the off-cycle route by default; a move decided by March gives you the actual windows, and with them a say in which school.

For most families this is the single most date-sensitive part of the whole relocation — more than the visa, which has no season.

Bottom line: missing the window is not losing the place. Go to the agrupamento of your address, in person, with the vaccination record and previous school reports, and do not let a pending residence file stop you from asking.
