AIMA: renew now if your permit expires by January 2027

Re-locant.com · Cosmic Vortex · The Portugal News · Oct 26, 2026

AIMA has widened its online Renewals Portal: residence permits that expire by 31 January 2027 can now be renewed early, as reported by The Portugal News, citing Público Brasil. The same portal takes permits that expired after 30 June 2025, investment permits (ARI, golden visas) and permanent residence certificates for EU citizens and cards for their non-EU family members. Permits that expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025 (except ARI) go through the separate AIMA Services platform. Since 15 October 2025 there is no automatic extension: once the request is registered and the fees are paid, AIMA issues a receipt valid for 180 days.

Why it matters for your move

If your card expires by the end of January 2027, apply now instead of waiting: without a filed request your expired card is not automatically valid. Before you apply, check that AIMA has your current address and email (Contact Form, Renewals Portal > Communicate/correct address, handled within two working days), so the new card does not go to an old address.
