How do I set up utilities in Portugal — electricity, water, gas, internet?
Getting the lights, water and wi-fi on is one of the first real tasks after you get the keys. It's not hard, but it needs two things ready first: your NIF (tax number) and a Portuguese bank account for direct debit (débito direto). With those, each utility takes a phone call or an online form.
Before you start: NIF · Portuguese bank account (IBAN) · your rental contract or deed · the previous occupant's provider names (ask the landlord/seller — a name-change is faster than a new contract).
Set up each service
- Portugal's electricity market is liberalised — you choose the supplier. Main ones: EDP Comercial, Galp, Endesa, Iberdrola, Goldenergy.
- To open: NIF, IBAN (for direct debit), address, and the meter's CPE number (on the old bill or meter). If someone lived there before, ask for the CPE — a mudança de titularidade (name change) is quick.
- Typical cost: ~€50–100/month — but much higher in winter if you heat with electric heaters (most older homes have no central heating).
- Water is usually municipal — you register with the local water company (via the câmara municipal or e.g. Águas de [your town], EPAL in Lisbon).
- To open: NIF, IBAN, contract/deed, sometimes a small deposit.
- Typical cost: ~€20–40/month for a couple, including sewage and waste on the same bill.
- In cities, many homes have piped natural gas (same suppliers as electricity — often bundled). Elsewhere, homes use bottled gas (botija) — a €25–35 canister delivered or bought locally.
- Piped gas: open like electricity (NIF, IBAN, the gas meter reference). Bottled: no contract — just buy the botija.
- Typical cost: piped ~€20–50/month; a botija lasts weeks to months depending on use.
- Fibre (fibra) is widely available and fast. Main providers: MEO, NOS, Vodafone, NOWO/Digi. Most sell bundles (internet + TV + mobile SIMs).
- To open: NIF, IBAN, address — they schedule an install visit (a few days to ~2 weeks). Check coverage at your exact address first.
- Typical cost: ~€30–45/month for a fibre + TV + mobile bundle. Watch the loyalty period (fidelização) — usually 24 months with a penalty to leave early.
Good to know
- Do the name-change, not a new contract, where you can. Transferring the previous occupant's contract into your name is faster and avoids re-connection fees.
- Set up direct debit. Portuguese utilities strongly assume débito direto; paper/manual payment is clunky.
- Winter electricity is the budget surprise. No central heating + electric heaters = bills that double or triple Dec–Feb. Budget for it.
- Bundles save money but lock you in — read the fidelização before signing.
Put utilities on your relocation checklist, estimate the monthly total with the cost-of-living calculator, or ask us about your specific address.
