Artigo 124.º (child born in Portugal)
The article of the Foreigners Act (Lei 23/2007) under which a child born in Portugal to foreign parents who hold a residence permit gets a residence permit of their own.
It exists because being born here does not by itself grant Portuguese nationality — a point that catches many families by surprise. The permit under article 124 is what makes the child legally resident in the meantime.
The request goes through AIMA's contact form at contactenos.aima.gov.pt and should be submitted within six months of registering the birth. You need the child's birth record, the passport of the parent who holds the permit, and that parent's valid residence title.
