The tax office is warning about fake phone calls — it does not call you about your return

Re-locant.com · Cosmic Vortex · Notícias ao Minuto · Aug 22, 2026

Portugal’s tax authority (AT) has warned of fraudulent calls in which someone claims to be the tax office and asks you to press a key to "correct a discrepancy" in your income declaration. AT states plainly that it does not make phone calls for this purpose, and that the same operation also runs through fake emails with links and SMS messages. Its recommendation is to ignore such calls. In the national cybersecurity centre’s 2024 report this technique — vishing, voice phishing — accounted for 18.31% of all social-engineering cases.

Why it matters for your move

Newcomers are the easiest target here: you do not yet know what the tax office does and does not do. The rule is simple — AT contacts you through the Portal das Finanças, not by pressing 1 on the phone.

This is Re-locant.com’s own brief, written to explain what the update means for people moving to or living in Portugal. For the full original report, see the source below.
