The August IMI instalment is due by 31 August — but only for some owners

Re-locant.com · Cosmic Vortex · Notícias ao Minuto · Aug 17, 2026

The second instalment of the municipal property tax falls due on 31 August 2026. Which instalments you get depends on the annual amount: up to €100 it is a single payment in May; between €100 and €500 it splits in two (May and November); above €500 it splits in three (May, August and November). So the August payment concerns only owners whose annual IMI exceeds €500 — everyone else has nothing to pay this month.

Why it matters for your move

Check the amount on your own notice rather than assuming: if your annual bill is under €500 there is no August instalment for you, and if it is above, missing 31 August adds interest and collection consequences.

This is Re-locant.com’s own brief, written to explain what the update means for people moving to or living in Portugal. For the full original report, see the source below.
