EU citizens and their families: permanent residence application no longer asks for NIF or NISS

Re-locant.com · Cosmic Vortex · AIMA · Sep 15, 2026

AIMA has updated its renewals portal (portal-renovacoes.aima.gov.pt) for EU nationals and their family members. When applying for a permanent residence certificate or card, you no longer have to give your tax number (NIF) or your social security number (NISS). AIMA warns that when you start the application a temporary validation message may appear and can take up to about 30 minutes.

Why it matters for your move

If you have lived here five years as an EU citizen or as the family member of one, a missing NIF or NISS no longer holds up your permanent residence application.

This is Re-locant.com’s own brief, written to explain what the update means for people moving to or living in Portugal. For the full original report, see the source below.
