How much income do I need to show for a Portuguese residence visa?

Re-locant.com · Cosmic Vortex · Updated 2026-08-31 ✓ sourced ✓ Current for 2026

Short answer: the yardstick is the national minimum wage — €920 a month in 2026, net of social security — counted per person in the household.

The per-person scale

  • Main applicant — 100% of the minimum wage
  • Each additional adult — 50%
  • Each child under 18, or a dependent adult child — 30%

A family of four (two adults, two children) therefore needs 100 + 50 + 30 + 30 = 210% of €920 ≈ €1,932 a month.

Where it can be lower

For a few categories — study, professional internship, volunteering and religious ministry — the requirement drops to 50% when accommodation is assured, and up to 90% when food is assured too. This reduction does not apply to the D7 in general, so do not budget on it unless your category is on that list.

What this number is and is not

It is the legal floor (Portaria 1563/2007), not a target. Consulates look at whether the income is stable and provable — a pension, rental contracts, dividends or an employment contract with statements behind them — not at a balance that appeared last month. Showing exactly the minimum with irregular income is a common refusal.

The D8 (remote work) visa has its own income requirement that is not set out on the same page, and each consulate publishes its own checklist. Confirm your figure with the Portuguese consulate in your country before you commit to dates.
